The letters 2D, 3D and 4D describe how the massage rollers inside a chair can move. They are the single biggest reason two chairs that look alike can feel completely different, and they account for much of the price gap between entry-level and premium models.
Quick answer: 2D rollers move up, down and side to side at a fixed depth. 3D rollers add adjustable depth, so the massage can be gentle or firm. 4D rollers add changing speed and rhythm for a more natural feel. For most households a 3D chair is enough; 4D is worth considering for daily use over many years.
This guide explains each type in plain language, sets out what you gain at each step, and helps you decide which one suits your home. If you are comparing specific models, our massage chair range lists the roller type on every product page.
How the roller mechanism works
Inside the backrest is a carriage with two to four roller heads. The carriage runs along a track that follows the shape of your spine. The rollers rotate, knead and press on the muscles either side of the spine. The "D" number describes how many ways those rollers can move.
2D rollers
A 2D mechanism moves up and down the spine and side to side across the back. The depth is fixed: the rollers press into the muscle with the same force throughout the session, and you can only change how hard they feel by leaning in or adding a cushion.
2D chairs are the cheapest to make and are now uncommon in quality chairs. Their main drawback is that a fixed depth suits one body shape well and others less well.
3D rollers
A 3D mechanism adds a third movement: the rollers can extend outwards from the backrest, further into the muscle. You can usually choose the depth, and in many chairs the depth changes during the programme so that thicker muscles in the lower back receive firmer pressure than the neck.
For most households, 3D is the right level. It allows the chair to be gentle for one person and firm for another, which matters when the chair is shared. The Aurex, Presage Pro and Enzonia+ SL Track all use 3D shiatsu rollers.
4D rollers
A 4D mechanism adds control over speed and rhythm. Rather than moving at a constant pace, the rollers can slow down over a tight area, speed up across others, and vary the rhythm in a way that feels closer to a therapist's hands. The difference is subtle in a short demonstration and more noticeable with daily use over several weeks.
4D is worth considering if you will use the chair every day, if you want the most natural-feeling massage, or if you have found 3D chairs too mechanical. Our Preston 4D is the 4D model in our range.
What about 5D?
Some sellers advertise 5D or even 6D chairs. There is no agreed technical standard for these labels. If you see one, ask the seller to explain exactly what the extra dimension does. In most cases it refers to a feature such as heat or airbags rather than a different roller movement.
Roller track matters as much as roller type
The track decides where the rollers can reach. An S-track follows the curve of the spine from the neck to the lower back. An SL-track continues under the seat to the glutes and upper thighs. If your discomfort is mainly in the lower back and hips, track length may matter more to you than whether the rollers are 3D or 4D. Our SL-track vs L-track guide covers this in detail.
| 2D | 3D | 4D | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | Up, down, side to side | Adds adjustable depth | Adds variable speed and rhythm |
| Feel | Uniform | Adjustable from gentle to firm | Varied, closest to manual massage |
| Best for | Occasional light use | Most homes and shared use | Daily users who want the most natural feel |
Which should you choose?
First-time buyers will be well served by a 3D chair. It is a large step up from 2D and costs considerably less than 4D.
Desk workers and commuters should look at both roller type and track. A 3D chair with an SL-track often helps lower back and hip tightness more than a 4D chair with a shorter track.
Daily users who plan to keep the chair for many years may find the extra cost of 4D worthwhile.
Families sharing one chair should choose adjustable depth at minimum, so that each person can set their own pressure.
Buying considerations in Pakistan
Roller type is one of the specifications most often exaggerated in listings. Ask the seller to explain exactly how the rollers move, and try the chair yourself. Check that the chair has local warranty service, because a 4D mechanism is more complex and you want parts and technicians available in Pakistan if anything needs attention.
Common mistakes
- Paying for 4D without trying a good 3D chair first.
- Choosing by roller type alone and ignoring track length.
- Believing "5D" or "6D" labels without asking what they mean.
- Testing at maximum intensity in the showroom instead of the setting you would use at home.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 4D massage chair worth the extra cost over 3D?
It depends on how often you will use it. For a few sessions a week, a good 3D chair is enough. For daily use over many years, the more varied rhythm of 4D is the feature regular users tend to value most.
Which roller type is best for back pain?
Roller type matters less than coverage and adjustability. A 3D chair with adjustable depth and a track that reaches your lower back is a sensible choice for everyday stiffness. For a diagnosed back condition, ask your physiotherapist first.
Can I try 3D and 4D chairs before buying?
Yes. All models are on display at our Lahore and Karachi showrooms. Sitting in a 3D and a 4D chair one after the other is the quickest way to decide.
Can I feel the difference between 3D and 4D in a short demo?
Sometimes only slightly. The difference becomes clearer over several sessions, so try a full programme on each.
Does roller type affect electricity use?
Only marginally. Power use depends more on heat and session length.
Is 2D ever the right choice?
For occasional light use on a tight budget it can be, but adjustable depth is worth having if more than one person will use the chair.
