Buyers often compare massage chairs by roller type and programme count, but the track is just as important. The track is the rail inside the backrest that the rollers travel along, and its shape decides which parts of your body the massage can actually reach.
Quick answer: an S-track follows the spine from the neck to the lower back. An L-track continues under the seat to the glutes. An SL-track combines both, following the spinal curve and then continuing beneath you. If you sit for long hours or feel tightness in the hips and glutes, an SL track massage chair reaches areas an S-track cannot.
This guide explains the three track types you will see in Pakistan, S-track, L-track and SL-track, and who each one suits.
S-track
An S-track follows the natural S-shaped curve of the spine, from the neck down to the lower back. Because it follows the curve, the rollers stay in contact with the back throughout their travel, including the inward curve of the lower back.
S-track chairs are well suited to neck, shoulder and upper and middle back tension. The limitation is that the massage stops at the lower back and does not reach the hips or glutes.
L-track
An L-track runs down the backrest and then bends forward under the seat, so the rollers continue beneath you to the glutes and the top of the thighs. The advantage is longer coverage. The drawback in some designs is that the track is flatter along the back, so contact with the curve of the lower back can be less even.
SL-track
An SL-track combines the two: it follows the S-shaped curve of the spine and then continues under the seat like an L-track. The rollers can work from the neck down through the lower back and into the glutes in one continuous movement.
For people whose discomfort sits low, around the lower back, hips and buttocks, the SL-track is usually the better choice. Long hours of sitting at a desk or in traffic tend to tighten exactly these muscles, which an S-track cannot reach.
| S-track | L-track | SL-track | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Follows spinal curve | Yes | Partly | Yes |
| Reaches glutes and upper thighs | No | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Neck, shoulders, upper and middle back | Longer coverage at lower cost | Full back plus hips and glutes |
Who should choose which
Choose an S-track if your tension is mainly in the neck, shoulders and upper back, for example from screen work, and you want to keep the cost down. The Aurex and Presage Pro use S-tracks.
Choose an SL-track if you sit for long hours, commute by car, or feel tightness in the lower back and hips. The Enzonia+ SL Track is built around this design, and the Preston 4D combines a full-length track with 4D rollers.
Track and roller type together
Track and roller type answer different questions. The track decides where the massage reaches; the roller type decides how it feels. A 3D chair with an SL-track will often suit someone with lower back and hip tightness better than a 4D chair with a shorter track. Our guide to 2D, 3D and 4D rollers covers the second question.
How to test a track in the showroom
Track differences are much easier to feel than to describe. When you try chairs, use a programme that covers the whole back and pay attention to three moments:
- At the lower back: do the rollers stay in contact as they pass through the inward curve, or do they lose contact?
- At the bottom of the backrest: does the massage stop, or continue under the seat?
- Under the seat: does the pressure on the glutes feel comfortable at a low intensity?
Try the same programme on an S-track chair and an SL-track chair, one after the other.
Body height and track length
Track length also affects how well a chair fits people of different heights. Very tall users may find that a short track does not reach the top of the shoulders; shorter users may find a long track starts above the neck. Most chairs scan the body or allow manual adjustment of the shoulder position. If your household includes people of very different heights, try the chair with each of them.
Track and recline together
In zero gravity, your body weight rests more fully on the rollers. A track that follows the spine closely gives an even, comfortable pressure in this position. This is another reason to try chairs reclined as well as upright.
Track choice and Pakistani lifestyles
Many buyers in Pakistan spend long hours sitting: office work, study and slow commutes in city traffic. Long sitting keeps the hip and buttock muscles loaded for hours, and that tension often shows up as lower back or hip discomfort. For these buyers the extra reach of an SL-track is often more useful than extras such as lighting or speakers.
Common mistakes
- Choosing an S-track when your main discomfort is in the hips.
- Paying for an SL-track when your tension is mainly in the neck and shoulders.
- Testing only upright; the track feels different in zero gravity.
- Forgetting tall or short family members when checking track length.

Frequently asked questions
Is an SL-track better than an L-track?
For most people, yes. It offers the same under-seat coverage while following the curve of the back more closely.
Which track is best for desk workers?
Desk workers usually feel tension in two places: the neck and shoulders, and the lower back and hips. An SL-track covers both.
Is the extra cost of an SL-track worth it?
If your discomfort is in the lower back, hips or glutes, yes, because an S-track cannot reach those areas. If it is mainly in the neck and shoulders, an S-track chair is a sensible saving.
Does track length matter for tall users?
Yes. Ask tall family members to try the chair to check that the massage reaches the shoulders.
Which Sereno Life chairs have an SL-track?
The Enzonia+ SL Track is built around it, and the Preston 4D has a full-length track from the neck to the hips.
Is glute massage uncomfortable?
It can feel firm at first. Start on a low intensity for the first week or two.
The quickest way to feel the difference is to try an S-track and an SL-track chair back to back at our showrooms. You can also compare every model in our massage chair collection.
